Als Sohn eines Textilkaufmanns wird Arnold Böcklin 1827 in Basel geboren. Seine unverkennbare mystische Ästhetik zeichnet ihn als einen der grössten Symbolisten des 19. Jahrhunderts aus. Allegorische Bildprogramme behaupten sich neben atmosphärisch geladenen Landschaftsdarstellungen, und auch sakrale Bildthemen sind fester Bestandteil einer vielschichtigen Auseinandersetzung Böcklins mit dem Bildmotiv als Bedeutungsträger. In jungen Jahren studierte er an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf und unterhielt zu dieser Zeit ein freundschaftliches Verhältnis zu seinem Schweizer Kommilitonen, Rudolf Koller (1828–1905). Studienreisen durch Europa ermöglichten ihm die Begegnung mit Meisterwerken des niederländischen Barocks und der italienischen Romantik. Insbesondere die Farbgebung in den Werken Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) beeindruckte Arnold Böcklin. Das Studium der Barbizonmalerei, unter anderem von Camille Corot (1796–1875), führen sein Interesse vermehrt zur naturalistischen Landschaftsmalerei. Die Auseinandersetzung inmitten der kontrastreichen künstlerischen Einflüsse führen dazu, dass Arnold Böcklin zu seinem eigenen, unverkennbaren Stil findet, der sich in einer bildthematischen Vielfalt in seinem Œuvre widerspiegelt.
