NECK AMPHORA

Attic, late 6th century BC. In the manner of the Edinburgh Painter.
Black-figured pottery. Side A: Depiction of Dionysus with a kantharos in his left hand and an ivy crown flanked by two dancing satyrs. Side B: Two fighting warriors flanked by two draped female figures. Lavish decoration, tendril and palmette friezes, tongue frieze at the base of the neck and a radiant wreath under a lothos frieze. With an indistinct customs stamp at the base, and numbered 7 and 112.
H 28 cm.


Several obvious, repaired breakages. Paint chips, cracks and scratches. Retouches and overpainting. Rim chips to the lip.

- Auction Bukowski, Figurenamulette - Klassische Antiken - Präkolumbianische Kunst, 8 December 1983, lot 127A (described there as “von Exekias geschaffen”, catalog copy available).
- Zurich private collection, acquired at the above auction.

The neck amphora shows the same handle ornament on the lotus frieze as some vases by the Edinburgh painter (cf. BAPD 303393, 303396) and similar decoration on the neck (cf. BAPD 303408, 303414).
