France, beginning of the 19th century. Based on a model by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741–1828).

H in total 27 and 28 cm, respectively.

This depiction is based on marble sculptures by Jean-Antoine Houdon, which he created between 1772 and 1780. The models were very popular and were still frequently copied in the 19th century. A version of the two groups of figures from 1790, attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, is part of the Wallace Collection in London (Inv. Nos.: S218 and S217). Cf. also: Anne Poulet, Guilhelm Scherf: Jean-Antoine Houdon, Sculpteur des lumières. Exhibition catalog of the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. 2003, No. 43, pp. 248-250.
