KNIFE WITH CHIMERA ATTACHMENT

French or Italian, 3rd quarter of the 16th century.
Rectangular, slightly rounded iron handle with chiselled decoration and riveted mother-of-pearl scales. Fully sculpted, pierced handle end in the shape of a chimera on an Ionic capital. Recessed bolster with acanthus leaf frieze. Blade with center tip.
L 23 cm.

Mother-of-pearl scales with cracks and rust stains. Corroded and oxidized. Blade heavily worn and with traces of corrosion.

A knife handle from the Kunstgewerbemuseum der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin (inv. no. 1936.28) can be used for iconographic comparisons with the chimera. There, the handle is stylistically located in Italy.
