KNIFE

French, ca. 1600.
Edged handle tapering to the blade, with a dome-shaped and gilt knob end. The handle inlaid with engraved mother-of-pearl and wood scales and parcel-gilt tendril decoration. Engraved and parcel-gilt blade bolster merging into the blade with center tip. Base of the blade engraved with tendril motifs. Smith's mark.
L 19.3 cm.


Blade heavily cleaned and oxidized. Chiselled decoration heavily worn towards the tip of the blade. Handle with restorations. Scales with losses. Handle knob dented.

A similar inlay with mother-of-pearl tiles and horn in a cube pattern on the handle can be seen at: Jochen Amme. Bestecke Die Egloffstein'sche Sammlung auf der Wartburg. Stuttgart, 1994. p. 47, fig. 29. Another comparable pair of cutlery can be found in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. There, only the dark inlaid part of the chessboard pattern is engraved with golden tendrils (inv. no. 2315&A-1855).
