A LACQUER PICNIC SET (SAGE-JUBAKO).

Japan, Meiji period, height 31 cm.
Portable set fitted with a metal handle on top and lobed corners. Decorated on black lacquer (roiro) ground in hira- and takamakie with a dragon amidst clouds on the top, the four-tiered jubako (stacking food container) with temple sceneries. Further comprising a pair of pewter sake bottles in a rectangular container, an upper drawer, a tray and an assorted red lacquer bowl. Very minor signs of wear.


Provenance: Old Swiss private collection from Southern Switzerland.
