TWO SMALL NICHIREN-SCHOOL WOOD FIGURES: KISHIMOJIN UND MUENZOKU.

Japan, 2nd half of Edo period, overall height 27 cm, figures 20 cm.
With polychrome paint, gold lacquer and metal ornaments. Kishimojin, the patron deity of children in a rare depiction as old woman with long hair, is also known as Kariteimo. The other figure is Muenzoku (Skr. Acalä), one of the Ten Rasetsunyo (former Hindu female demons) who accompany Kariteimo as scholars of the Lotus Sutra, recognisable by the sutra box. Traces of age. Provenance: Old Swiss private collection from Southern Switzerland.
The original figure of this particular type called Nakayama Kishimojin, the guardian of the Lotus Sutra within the Nichiren school, is located in the Hokekyô-ji in Nakayama, one of the most sigificant temples of the Nichiren school.
