MANTEL CLOCK "AFRICAN WITH BARREL"

Directory / Empire, Paris ca. 1800/10. The design by J.A. Reiche (Jean-André Reiche, active ca. 1810/20), the dial inscribed: à Paris.
Matte and polished gilt bronze, in part painted black. The figure of a man is rolling the barrel-shaped case. Applied decoration: palm fronds, pieces of luggage, exotic birds and anchors as symbols for overseas trading. White enamel dial. Parisian movement, striking the 1/2-hour on bell. Key missing.
28 x 11 x 33 cm.

Trigger for the striking mechanism requires repair. Gilding rubbed.

An identical clock by J.A. Reiche can be found in the Musée d'Aquitaine, under the following description and inventory number: Pendule «au nègre», modèle de Jean-André Reiche, époque Empire, bronze doré et patiné, 33x27, Inv. No. 2009.4.1.
