GUILLERMO WIEDEMANN

(Munich 1905 - 1969 Key Biscayne)
Nocturno. 1947.
Oil on board.
Signed and dated lower right: Wiedemann 1947.
80 x 60 cm.

Provenance:
- Studio of the artist.
- Erich Arendt, Colombia/Germany, bought directly from the artist.
- Private collection Germany, by descent to the present owner.

Wilhelm Egon Wiedemann was born in Munich in 1905. After his art was classified as "degenerate" and he became the victim of repressive measures, he fled to Colombia in 1939.

His first exhibition in his new homeland took place in 1940 and was met with great success. Over the following decades, he became one of the most important painters in the country. The depictions became increasingly abstract, yet not entirely non-objective.

Created in 1947, "Nocturno" shows three standing women, indicated only through a few outlines and plain surfaces. The scene is rather dark and mysterious. The faces are unrecognisable.
This painting belonged to the writer Erich Arendt. He likewise had fled from the Nazi regime and in 1941 received a visa for Colombia, where he befriended Wiedemann. As he returned to his homeland in 1950, to the former GDR, the present work came back to Germany.
