MARKUS WEGGENMANN
- Galerie Mark Müller, Zurich.
- Purchased from the above by the present owner, since then privately owned Switzerland.
In his thirties, the artist Markus Weggenmann, born in Singen, decided to pursue an entirely different course in life. The trained occupational therapist and psychoanalyst gave up his psychology practice in Zurich, in order to dedicate himself entirely to painting.
The artist wished that his large format pictures would exist on their own terms. He achieved this, by creating a balanced interplay between the greatest possible strength of colour, and the aesthetic perfection of abstract forms. With clear lines on a homogenous, spotless surface, Weggenmann produces luminous, deep and opaque colours.
To execute his enamel paintings, which he devised in 1999, Markus Weggenmann paints intensely coloured small format works on paper, which he scans, to then rework them digitally in terms of form and colour. These designs are then projected onto an aluminium panel and finally sprayed with car paint. This is followed by sanding and sealing and a final layer of clear varnish, until the work has achieved perfection.
The present picture with its organic form and harmonious saturated colours, has a sensual character, which appears equally controlled and aloof. Through this ambiguity, the artist achieves what he seeks in his pictures: an abstract idea of painting, which is colourful and carries within itself a rampant vibrancy.
