Grohé wurde in Wintersheim geboren und zog 1872 mit seinem Bruder Jean-Michel nach Paris. Zwei Jahre später führten sie ihre eigene Werkstatt, die schon bald eine bedeutende "notoriété" erlangte. Ab 1847 als offizielle Gemeinschaft "Grohé Frères" tätig, belieferten sie König Louis-Philippe, Kaiser Napoleon III, Kaiserin Eugénie, Königin Viktoria von England, den Duc d'Aumale, Madame Pelouze usw. In zeitgenössischen Quellen wird G. Grohé wie folgt beschrieben: "Un célèbre industriel qui fut aussi l'un des grands artistes de son temps... digne continuateur de Boulle, Gouthière et Riesener, véritable grand maître de l'ébénisterie artistique au XIXe siècle. Une carrière de plus de cinquante années, exclusivement consacrée au relèvement et à la reconstitution d'in art national entre tous... a rempli nos musées, nos palais nationaux de chefs d'oeuvres imcomparables. Durch die Teilnahme an zahlreichen Ausstellungen, wo er regelmässig Preise erhielt, wurde G. Grohé als Vize-Präsident des "comité d'admission et d'installation" gewählt und in dessen Rapport als "maître incontesté de l'ébénisterie moderne" bezeichnet. Lit.: C.
