In 1907, Pierre-Auguste Renoir settled with his family permanently in Cagnes-sur-Mer in search of a climate more favorable to his health. In the last years of his life, the painter suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. The mild climate in the south of France made Renoir’s severe illness more bearable.
Cagnes-sur-Mer not only offered him a pleasant climate, but also a beautiful landscape that inspired him, which he captured in many of his latest works. During this period, he continued to develop his characteristic style and painted numerous pictures that captured the light and colors of the area.
The present work shows a favorite view for the artist: a serene landscape with trees and fields contrasting with a slightly cloudy sky. The overall impression is one of peace and the beauty of nature.
Renoir lived in Cagnes until his death in 1919. There he also bought a house with a beautiful park and built a studio. The villa where he lived, called “Les Collettes”, is now a museum dedicated to his life and works.
