A PAIR OF IMPORTANT SHIELDS, so-called “MILTON SHIELD”

Edwardian, England. Facsimile of the design by Léonard Morel-Ladeuil (1820–1888) from 1859, created by Elkington & Co.
Synthetic resin, imitating tortoiseshell. Oval plaque with scenes from John Milton's “Paradise Lost” with the Archangel Raphael in the central medallion, proclaiming the victory over the rebellious angels to Adam and Eve.

The Milton shield was made for the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, where it won a gold medal. This shield, along with a reproduction, are part of the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (Inv. Nos. 546-1868 and REPRO.1868C-138, respectively). A further reproduction is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Inv. No. 2011.428).
