The Swiss painter, sculptor, designer and architect Max Bill was a pioneer of Concrete Art and a visionary creative figure who redefined the boundaries of aesthetics with his unique body of work.

The two paintings ‘Transcoloration’ (lot 3415) and ‘Blue and Red around Yellow’ (lot 3417), as well as the gilt brass sculpture ‘Unity of Three Equal Cylinders’ (lot 3416) are characteristic of Max Bill's work. He strove for a universal language of form based on mathematical principles and strict aesthetic standards. Max Bill was not only an aesthete of form, but also a profound thinker whose art sometimes reflected on the relationship between man and space, order and chaos, in their eternal nature.

With his work ‘Unity of Three Equal Cylinders’, Max Bill, a master of geometric abstraction, created a sculpture that can be seen not only as an aesthetic object, but also as a manifestation of his artistic philosophy. Through the clarity of its forms and the precision of its execution, this sculpture remains a timeless testimony to the beauty of Concrete Art. The sculpture consists of three perfectly formed cylinders that unite in a harmonious whole. Each cylinder appears to be independent and yet they are connected, forming a balanced composition. The clear lines lend the sculpture an eternal elegance and a calm, impressive presence.

The compositions of the two paintings ‘Transcoloration’ (lot 3415) and ‘Blue and Red around Yellow’ (lot 3416) underline Max Bill's ability to achieve maximum effect with minimalist means. Through the precise arrangement of colour surfaces and the use of powerful contrasts, an extraordinary tension between form and colour is created, which is characteristic of Bill's constructivist ideas. What appear as strictly rational grid arrangements and structures are also typical of this exponent of the Zurich School of Concrete Art. The pursuit of harmony and order as well as the desire for balance and equilibrium are unmistakable. With the aim of developing a language that can communicate across cultural and temporal divides, Bill endeavoured to create an art that is universally comprehensible and timeless.
