The original owner of this work, Legation Councillor Dr August Ochsenbein, was the Swiss envoy in Berlin and a friend of Pechstein's during his years in Berlin. Due to the bombing of the city in August 1943, he moved seven of Pechstein's paintings to Switzerland.
There is also a portrait of Ochsenbein, which the artist created in 1942.
