The Danish artist Per Kirkeby was born in Copenhagen in 1938. Before devoting himself to art, he studied geology at the University of Copenhagen and received his doctorate on Arctic geology in 1964. In addition to his geology studies, in 1962 he began studying painting at the "Eskperimenterende Kunstskole".

"In the end, landscape doesn't interest me one bit. I don't paint landscapes that exist out there. Nor do I paint what in a banal sense are called inner landscapes. I paint a picture, and the process of getting a picture going is in many ways reminiscent of the processes that have created the earth or landscapes over a very long period of time." Per Kirkeby.

The present large-format work "Fram Herbst" from 2005 is typical of Kirkeby's landscape painting. Rather than focusing on an idyllic landscape or its depiction, he distances himself, and analyses the structure and space in order to reproduce these findings in an abstract representation of nature. The artist's knowledge of geology and nature always flows into his compositions; his motifs evoke rock formations, the earth's crust, sedimentary layers, erosion and volcanic strata.

His unique painting style compels the viewer to use their imagination. He applies layer upon layer of paint, works it with the squeegee, omits sections, scratches and carves into the layer of paint, thus creating a dynamic surface. Complementing his outstanding, varied painting technique, is Per Kirkeby's mastery of colour. His colour palette is an exploration of nature and the seasons. Autumn, mentioned in the title, is found in the rich dark red and earthy rust red, lightened by a bright yellow-green and contrasted with a black-brown.

With the aid of his vibrant colour palette, the dynamic surface and his unique motifs, Per Kirkeby’s stunning autumnal landscape emerges from an abstract painting before the viewer's eyes.
