Comparative literature:
Friedel Kirsch (ed.), 100 Jahre Porzellane und Fayencen des 18. Jh., Weinheim 2019, pp. 474-481, pp. 746-759, Cat. No. 86.
The service on offer, from which only two sets are known so far, belongs to a series of fine chinoiserie decorations from Frankenthal, which were painted by the porcelain painter Christian Friedrich Winterstein for Frankenthal in the years 1762-1786.
The fine decorations make reference to chinoiseries by Jean Pillement (1728 Lyons 1808), who created several chinoiserie pattern books between 1754 and 1762 while in London, including the monthly publication that served as the painting pattern for another similar Frankenthal service. C. Kirsch presented Winterstein's chinoiserie decorations in a study in 2019, see Langeloh Porcelain Jubiläumskatalog, 2019, Cat. No. 85.
A bowl and a cup with saucer from the service on offer are depicted in Kirsch's catalog (Cat. Nos. 86 and 140). The gold decoration by Jacob Daute, the oversized butterflies, birds, and large exotic plants are characteristic features of this service.
