A RARE DOUBLE-SIDED BUDDHA STELE.

India, Pala dynasty, Bihar, 9th c. Height ca. 72 cm.
Sandstone. Buddha showing the dharmacakramudra is seated in a niche crowned by a kirtimukha torana. On the other side the shape of a second Buddha is discernible. Wood stand. Partly weathered.


Provenance: Swiss private collection: 1966 with Max Rutishauser Arts et Antiquités (receipt available), thence by descent.
