AMMONITES GROUP

Lytoceras cornucopiae
Lyon, Belmont, France
Jurassic, Lias. Toarcian (around 183 million years)
59 x 40 x 21 cm

Ammonites are fossilised shells of extinct cephalopods and are equally important for the study of geology and palaeontology. Thanks to their great variety of forms and unique beauty, they are popular collectors' items. Ammonites were named "Ammons horns" after the ancient Egyptian god of life and reproduction, who was usually depicted with rams horns.

The group presented here is of the finest quality and shows no discernible restorations. The sculptural dimension of the ammonite is underlined by collar-like ornamentation which is typical of the "Fimbriati" group.
