ALBARELLO

Naples, from the “Il Maestro dei profili corrucciati” circle, ca. 1530-60.
Cylindrical maiolica earthenware jar with a recessed wall, painted with a profile of a lady with a yellow headdress, and to the left with a band of writing entitled “Gennarella” on a blue ground and leaf tendrils, painted in blue, ochre and yellow with blue scrollwork, between dotted borders on the shoulder of the vessel and on the foot.
H 21 cm.

A thermoluminescence analysis (TL) by “Arcadia, Tecnologie Per I Beni Culturali, Milan” in 2009 confirmed the dating to the early 16th century.

Provenance:
Private collection, Lugano.

The style of the decoration with the bust of the woman turned to the side with a fixed gaze and the floral decoration in bold, blue brushstrokes can be found on a group of comparable albarelli, which Guido Donatone attributed to the maître “dei Profili Corrucciati” from Naples in 1993, also in comparison with contemporary floor tiles from Neapolitan churches. For comparison, see two albarelli in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, dated ca. 1530-60 (Accession Number: 41.100.268.). A detailed discussion can be found in G. Donatone, La maiolica napoletana del Rinascimento, Naples, 1993, figs. 14 to 35.
