BEZOAR

Germany
Circa 1850
D 9 cm

A bezoar is an indigestible stone often found in the stomachs of ruminants. If the bezoar ball, due to its long stay in this environment, is covered by a hard, smooth crust, it is called a bezoar stone.

In ancient times, many cultures attributed magical powers to bezoars and even made them into jewellery and amulets. It was especially known as a remedy against almost any kind of poison. Its name, which derives from the Persian word ‘padzhar’, meaning ‘antidote’, also originated from this belief. These myths and legends have been passed down over generations to this day. When Harry Potter, probably the most famous fictional wizard of modern times, saves the life of his friend Ron, who was poisoned with a botched love potion, he does so with a bezoar.

The specimen presented here comes from a so-called bezoar goat. It is in very good condition, and is of exceptional size.
