"Lab-Study with Dots" by Sylvie Fleury engages the viewer with its illusion of depth and a lively choreography of coloured spheres. On a black background, two spheres - one only hinted at, the other almost complete - form the centre of this expressive painting. Both are richly decorated with large dots in light green, red, violet and blue, most of which lie within the unfinished spheres and lend them an almost tangible three-dimensionality.

Particularly striking are the seven orange coloured dots, which seem to tell a story of their own: They appear to enter the picture from the left, move cautiously into and through the main spheres and finally leave the picture again on the right-hand side. This translocation not only suggests a mysterious journey through the artwork presented here, but also endows it with a sense of movement and rotation.

Various circular elements and implied circles in light and dark purple - accentuated by four circular areas in dark blue and red - crowd closely together between the two spheres and look as if they were exploring the surrounding area. At the centre of the composition, purple shapes merge to form two hearts, one a mirror image of the other, seamlessly connecting the two spheres. Love, union, cohesion, harmony, earth, the universe - what message is Sylvie Fleury trying to convey?
