CANDELABRA FOOT
Minden, ca. 1200.
Engraved brass. Triangular shape with slightly curved walls, pierced and decorated with mythical creatures. The corner edges decorated with staggered dragons, the feet ending in the shape of dragons.
15 × 15 × 7.5 cm.
Feet bent, somewhat worn in some areas.
A pair of candlesticks with a comparable foot with the staggered dragon motif can be found in the Diözesanmuseum in Münster i.W. (Otto v. Falke and Erich Meyer. Bronzegeräte des Mittelalters. Volume 1. Romanische Leuchter und Gefässe Giessgefässe der Gotik. Berlin 1983. fig. 115, p. 53). Another example is a candlestick in Münstermeifeld in the Eifel, described as West German, 2nd half of the 12th century (ibid. fig. 94, p. 45).
