CHESS SET

India, Berhampur, early 19th century. Probably John's Company.
32 carved ivory figures, in part painted green/grey. The king and queen riding on a howdah. The knight riding a camel. Bishops riding horses. The rooks as maharajas on elephants. With an assorted wooden box inlaid with mother-of-pearl, ivory and in part ebonized wood in a geometric pattern. 2 keys.
King 8 cm high, pawns 3.5 and 4 cm.

Weapons and attributes in part incomplete. White king missing decorative tips. 1 white rook with an arm missing. Box somewhat warped and with signs of use, scratches.

The name of this set probably comes from the John Company, which was active in India from the 18th century onwards and made chess pieces for the British East India Company.
