LATE RENAISSANCE TOWER CLOCK WITH DATE
Provenance:
- According to oral tradition and an inventory from 1997, this clock comes from the Fremersdorf collection (not yet confirmed).
- Swiss private collection
Cf. two very similar tower clocks, Augsburg, early 17th century. in: Klaus Maurice. Die deutsche Räderuhr. Volume II. Munich 1976, No. 135 and 133. In addition to their shape, the clocks mentioned therein are related to the clock on offer in terms of the use of balusters and pointed pyramids. Both clocks rest on stepped, in part profiled bases, one with small flattened feet. The feet in the form of reclining lions on the clock on offer must in all probability be regarded as a later addition, although tower clocks supported by lion figures are well known. In comparison, however, the proportions of these are too large.
