MAMMOTH HAIR

Mammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene to Holocene (800 000 to 3 700 years)
Russia
5 × 8 cm (not including frame)

The woolly mammoth is an extinct species of the elephant family. It evolved in Siberia about 800,000 to 600,000 years ago and inhabited the ice-age steppes of northern Eurasia and North America. At the end of the Pleistocene it became extinct in much of its range, but survived regionally in some remnant populations until the Middle Holocene, about 3,700 years ago.

Due to the cold of the Siberian tundra, very well-preserved parts of mammoths and even entire skeletons can still be recovered from the ice to this day. Their connection to humans, however, goes much deeper. In the earliest cave paintings known to us, humans already depicted mammoths as their giant contemporaries.

The mammoth hair presented here is in exceptional condition and of considerable length. The chestnut–brown strands have been framed for optimal presentation, creating both an unusual and fascinating art object.
