"MARCELLO", PSEUDONYM OF ADÈLE D’AFFRY

(1836–1879)
Bust of the "Chef Abyssin". Patinated bronze. Signed Marcello and with foundry stamp AB.
H 55 cm.

Adèle d'Affry, also known as the "Duchess of Castiglione Colonna", was the daughter of the Swiss Count Louis d'Affry, a patrician family from Fribourg. She enjoyed a classical education for girls in keeping with her rank, and attended drawing and watercolor classes. In 1853/54, in Rome, Adèle first attended sculpture classes taught by the Swiss sculptor Heinrich Max Imhof (1795-1869). However, her application to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris was rejected. After numerous setbacks, she decided to exhibit for the first time in 1863 at the Paris Salon under the male pseudonym "Marcello".

"Le Chef Abyssin" marked the culmination of Marcello's artistic output and was exhibited in a bronze and white marble version at the 1870 Salon. In 1873, she was awarded a medal at the World Fair in Vienna.

A marble version of the bust on offer is in the Musée d'Orsay (Inv. No. 15425), and many of her sketches, paintings and sculptures are kept at the Fondation Marcello in Fribourg.
