RARE LARGE PLATTER WITH "WARSAW" BROCADE DECORATION
Its extraordinary size makes the item on offer unique.
A number of molded pieces, bowls and plates exist, primarily in curved but also round and octagonal shapes, bearing this Japanese decoration. Although the name "Warsaw service" has always been common in the art trade as a blanket term for pieces with this decoration, evidence of such a commissioned service is actually still lacking.
In the catalog of the Ernst Schneider Collection in Schloss Lustheim, Julia Weber cites large bowls of 35 cm diameter (Rijksmuseum Amsterdam) and 31 cm diameter as well as, inter alia, octagonal plates that were offered in a small size of only 22 cm diameter at an auction in London in 1983 (Weber 2013, Vol. II, p. 108, Note 2). A helmet-shaped water jug with basin was recently on offer at Koller Auctions in Zurich (Auction of the Collection Dr. Müller-Frei, 16 June 2020, Lot No. 1577).
Two large bowls of this design with alternative Imari paintwork are also in the Schneider Collection (see Weber 2013, p. 101) and in the Hans Syz Collection (S. Ducret, Frühmeissner Dekors, KFS Mitteiliungsblatt No. 50, 1960, Ils. 50, 51).
