"J’aime le plus Lanskoy et de Staël qui sont les plus abstraits, qui ne suivent ni Matisse, ni Bonnard, ni même Picasso." Jeanne Bucher (1872-1946), art dealer, in a letter dated 28 May 1945 on André Lanskoy and Nicolas de Staël.

The large painting by André Lanskoy offered here is a classic example of the artist's late work, which was entirely dedicated to abstraction. It features a multiplicity of forms, rendered in distinctive colours covering 2 x 1.35 meters of canvas. The composition is warm and harmonious, with shades of orange and yellow gouache balanced with dark green and met by blue, white and dark red pigments. Fields of colour and lines combine to form an overall unity and impart the work in its large-format totality with a powerful, moving and lyrical effect. Lanskoy takes the viewer into his cheerful world of colour.

Born in Moscow, Lanskoy went to Paris in 1921, where he would live and work for the rest of his life. After a period of working in a figurative style — in which he was inspired by artists such as van Gogh, Matisse and Soutine — he turned increasingly to abstraction from the 1930s onwards. With the support of his friend and colleague Nicolas de Staël, Lanskoy eventually developed his own characteristic, abstract formal vocabulary by 1950. In the following years, his individual style helped the artist to achieve international fame, exhibiting at numerous exhibitions in the USA, as well as at documenta in Kassel.

The present painting is to be classified in a period in which Lanskoy confidently followed his personal concept of abstraction as an established artist. An impressive large painting like the one offered here is a rarity on the art market.
