We are grateful to Dr. Birgit Schumacher for confirming the authorship of the present work on the basis of a photograph. She dates the work in the first half of the 1650s and points out that the composition of our painting and its beige-brownish-green palette with few pure colour accents are characteristic of the dune landscapes of Philips Wouwerman from the 1650s.
