We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the attribution of the present work on the basis of a photograph. He points out that there are at least two further known variations of this composition by Jacob Fransz. van der Merck. A monogrammed version is also mentioned in the archives of Cornelis Hofstede de Groot (H. d.G. fiche No. 307384).
