Damien Hirst wird am 7. Juni 1965 in Bristol geboren und wächst in Leeds auf. Mit 16 Jahren beginnt er Anatomiezeichnungen in der Anatomie-Abteilung der Leeds Medicine School anzufertigen. Von 1986-1989 studiert er am renommierten Goldsmith College in London, was sein Verständnis der klassischen Techniken Malerei, Zeichnung, Skulptur komplett verändert. Bereits zu Studentenzeiten beginnt er mit der Arbeit an einigen seiner wichtigsten Serien. Die ersten Werke der „Medicine Cabinets“ stammen aus seinem zweiten Jahr am College. In unterschiedlich grossen Schränken sammelt und präsentiert er eine Reihe von Medikamenten, die er wie in einem Schaukasten ausstellt. 1988 kuratiert er mit anderen Studenten des Goldsmith College die Ausstellung „Freeze“ in einem leerstehenden Lagerhaus, die als Geburtsstunde des Young British Artists gilt. Die Serie der „Spot Paintings“ hat hier ihren Ursprung, in dem Hirst runde, farbige Flecken an die Wand des Lagerhauses aufträgt. Auch tauchen immer wieder in seinem Werk auf.

1991 beginnt er an seiner spektakulärsten Reihe zu arbeiten – „Natural History“. Er legt Tiere – Haie, Schafe, Kühe – in schlichten Glastanks mit Formaldehyd ein, später zerschneidet er auch einige Tiere. Mit diesen Arbeiten ist er bei der „Sensation“-Ausstellung 1997 vertreten, die die „Young British Artists“ weltweit bekannt machen und gleichzeitig einen Ansturm der Empörung auslöst. Der Sammler, Künstlerhändler und Mäzen Charles Saatchi, dessen Sammlung diese Ausstellung umfasst, gehört zu den ersten und bedeutendsten Förderern der Young British Artists. Eine weitere Arbeit, die Aufsehen erregt, schafft Hirst 2007 mit „For the Love of God“ – ein mit 8601 Diamanten besetzter Platinabguss eines Schädels. Liebe, Tod, Religion und die Konsumkultur sind die einschlägigen Themen in Hirsts Werk, bei deren Umsetzung er gänzlich neue Wege beschreitet und fast immer provoziert.

2008, am Tag vor der Lehman Pleite, versteigert Hirst ohne Einbezug seiner Galerien, White Cube und Larry Gagosian, 287 Kunstwerke direkt aus seinem Atelier bei Sotheby’s, um neue Wege auf dem Kunstmarkt zu gehen und um gleichzeitig aber auch neue Käuferschaften zu erreichen. Die 2-tägige Auktion erzielt eine Rekordsumme von US$200,7 Mio. für eine Auktion, die exklusiv einem einzigen Künstler gewidmet ist.2002 ist er Teilnehmer der 50. Venedig Biennale, 2012 richtet ihm die Tate Modern eine umfassende Retrospektive aus. Bereits 1995 wird ihm der renommierte Turner Preise verliehen. Damien Hirst lebt und arbeitet in Devon.
