DOMOTO, HISAO

Hisao Dōmoto wird 1928 in Kyoto als Sohn einer wohlhabenden Familie geboren. Sein Vater ist ein berühmter Kunstsammler von traditioneller, japanischer Kunst und sein Onkel, Inshô Dōmoto, gleichfalls bekannter japanischer Maler der Nihonga-Richtung. Hisao Dōmoto bleibt in seinen jungen Jahren zunächst dem Familiengeist treu und studiert die traditionelle Malerei an der Kunsthochschule von Kyoto. Bereits in Japan kann er ihm Erfolge verzeichnen, doch schnell entdeckt er die zeitgenössische westliche Kunst. Ausschlaggeben ist der Salon de Mai in Japan von 1952, wo die entstehende japanischen Künstler-Avantgarde, die Gutai-Gruppe, vertreten ist, und einer Europareise im selben Jahr. Von nun an nimmt er die westlichen Techniken auf, angezogen zunächst vom Surrealismus, und später widmet er sich ausschliesslich des Abstrakten.

Dōmoto lässt sich 1955 in Frankreich nieder. Seine Werke zeichnen sich zu dieser Zeit mit konkreten Inhalten aus. Er macht sich zunächst einen Namen mit luftiger, romantischer Kalligrafie à la Zao Wou-Ki, und er nähert sich der Stilrichtung der Lyrischen Abstraktion. Während er von 1957 bis 1960 mit der Pariser Galerie Stadler zusammenarbeitet, entdeckt er seinen eigenen Weg und entwickelt ab den 1960er Jahre sein Konzept der «Solution de Continuité». Hsiao Dōmoto stirbt 2013 in Kyoto.
