Der Amerikaner Robert Motherwell gehört zu den Abstrakten Expressionisten. Er wird am 24. Januar 1915 in Aberdeen, Washington geboren. Von 1932 – 1938 studiert er Malerei an der California School of Fine Arts und macht seinen Bachelor in Philosophie an der Standford University. In Harvard widmet er sich der Philosophie und der französischen Literatur, sodass es ihn 1938/1939 nach Paris zieht. Hier macht er erstmals Bekanntschaft mit Künstlern wie Piet Mondrian und Fernand Léger und hat seine erste Ausstellung in der Galerie Duncan. Zurück in den USA beginnt Motherwell sein Studium der Kunstgeschichte an der New Yorker Columbia University bei Meyer Schapiro und Kurt Seligmann. Die Bekanntschaft mit Roberto Matta und Wolfgang Paalen, letzteren lernt er auf der gemeinsamen Mexiko-Reise kennen, bringt ihm den Surrealismus näher. Er hat zunehmend Ausstellungen und nimmt u.a. 1946 an der grossen MoMA Ausstellung "Fourteen Americans" teil. 1945 lehrt Motherwell am bekannten Black Mountain College, 1951-1958 am Hunter College, New York. Er unternimmt zahlreiche Reisen durch Europa. Robert Motherwell ist viermal verheiratet, u.a. mit Helen Frankenthaler.

Wie auch Jackson Pollock, als dessen intellektueller Gegenpart er oft tituliert wird, ist Motherwell in seinem Frühwerk dem Surrealismus eng verbunden. In den 1950er Jahren jedoch wendet er sich dem Abstrakten Expressionismus zu und entwickelt eine eigene Bildsprache, die durch kräftige schwarze Zeichen und gestische Motive geprägt ist. In den 1960er wendet er sich zunehmend auch der Farbfeldmalerei zu. Als seine ethischen Werke nennt er u.a. pure Präsenz, Leidenschaft, Unmittelbarkeit, Objektivität und klare Farben. Er arbeitet oftmals in grossangelegten Serien, basierend auf literarischen Werken. Er beherrscht alle Techniken meisterhaft.

1959 und 1964 gehört Motherwell zu den Teilnehmern der documenta II und III in Kassel. 1965 richtet das Museum of Modern Art seine erste umfassende Retrospektive aus. Zahlreiche Galerie- und Museumsausstellung weltweit folgen. Auch die grössten Ehrungen werden dem Amerikaner zuteil: 1964 der Guggenheim International Award; 1977 die Médaille de Vermeil der Stadt Paris; 1988 wird er zum Offizier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Frankreich ernannt; 1989 wird ihm die National Medal of Arts verliehen. Robert Motherwell wird 1970 zum Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1985 zum Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences und 1990 zum Associate Member der National Academy of Design. Das Gesamtœuvre Robert Motherwells wird durch die Dedalus Foundation New York bearbeitet und als Werkverzeichnis (teils auch online) publiziert.Robert Motherwell stirbt am 16. Juli 1991 in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
