ALECHINSKY, PIERRE

Pierre Alechinsky wird 1927 als Sohn russisch-jüdischer Einwanderer in Brüssel geboren. Im Alter von 17 Jahren beginnt er sein Studium der Buchillustration und Typographie an der Hochschule für Architektur und Angewandte Künste in Brüssel. 1945 entdeckt er das Werk von Michaux, Dubuffet und den Surrealisten, die ihn zunächst beeinflussen werden. Im Jahr 1949 macht er die Bekanntschaft des Malers Christian Dotremon und schliesst sich der Künstlergruppe CoBrA an. Die länderübergreifende avantgardistische Bewegung entwickelt unter dem Einfluss des Surrealismus eine autonome Bildwelt und expressive Figuration. Pierre Alechinsky ist in der Gruppe sehr involviert und leistet einen intensiven Beitrag mit der Erstellung der Zeitschrift CoBrA. Die Gruppe hat aber nur wenige Jahre Bestand und löst sich bereits 1953 wieder auf. Daraufhin zieht Alechinsky nach Paris. Sein Interesse an Buchmalerei und Schriftkunst lässt seine Affinität zum Papier wachsen und dieses wird zu seinem bevorzugtem Bildträger. Durch die Freundschaft zu dem chinesisch-amerikanischen Dichter und Maler Walasse Ting wird in den 50er Jahren Alechinskys Interesse an ostasiatischer Maltechnik und Kalligrafie erweckt, und er beginnt sich intensiv damit auseinanderzusetzen. Nach einer Reise nach Japan 1955 verändert sich sein Malstil. Von seinen überwiegenden abstrakten Formen kommt er zu einer gegenständlicheren und grob gemalten Figuration. Diese Figuren sind von der asiatischen Kunst beeinflusst, namentlich der Kalligrafie. Sein Werk wird lyrisch, voller Phantasie und kultureller Anklänge, das deutlich einen Bogen zwischen westeuropäischer und asiatischer Kultur spannt.

Pierre Alechinskys Arbeiten sind ab den 1960er Jahren international ausgestellt, er beteiligt sich an zwei Biennalen in Venedig und es werden ihm Einzelausstellungen in bedeutenden Institutionen wie dem Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam oder dem Centre Pompidou in Paris gewidmet. 2007 wird eine wichtige Retrospektive in den Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brüssel gezeigt. Darüber hinaus wird Alechinsky 1983 zum Professor für Malerei an der Pariser Staatlichen Hochschule für Bildende Künste ernannt und 1994 mit der Ehrendoktorwürde der Freien Universität Brüssel ausgezeichnet. Für seine innovative Arbeit erhält er zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen, darunter noch vor kurzem im Jahr 2018 den Kunstpreis "Praemium Imperiale", welchen er mit über 90 Jahren in Empfang nehmen darf.
