SPITZWEG, CARL

1808 München 1885

Carl Spitzweg wurde als zweiter Sohn des wohlhabenden Kaufmanns Simon Spitzweg (1776–1828) 1808 in München geboren und zählt zu den bedeutendsten Künstlern und „besten Fachleuten seiner Zeit“ wie Adolf Alt, ein besonderer Kenner der Münchner Malerei, anführt. Sein Vater hatte ihn zum Apotheker bestimmt, und der Junge Carl fügte sich: Er absolvierte das Studium der Pharmazie, Botanik und Chemie und bestand 1832 das Universitätsexamen als Apotheker mit Auszeichnung, wobei er später beim Mischen seiner leuchtenden und ausdrucksvollen Farben auf seine naturwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse zurückgreifen konnte. Auf zahlreichen Studienreisen, wie beispielsweise nach Venedig, Florenz, Rom und Neapel, schulte er seine künstlerischen Fähigkeiten als Autodidakt, wobei seine Vorliebe im Besonderen der Darstellung von Menschen in ihrem zeitbedingten bürgerlichen Milieu galt. Seine Gemälde, die immer wieder mit einer humoristischen Note versehen sind, zeichnen sich durch fröhliche und heitere Momente und einem Blick fürs Detail aus. Durch die Freundschaft mit Eduard Schleich d. Ä. (1812–1874) und ihren zahlreichen gemeinsamen Studienreisen war Spitzwegs Interesse an der Landschaftsmalerei spätestens seit den 1850er-Jahren geweckt. Eine natürliche Lichtführung gepaart mit einer fein abgestimmten Farbpalette vereinen sich in stimmungsvollen, lebendigen Kompositionen und führen jenen atmosphärischen Reiz vor Augen, der die Betrachter zu fesseln vermag.
