A PAIR OF CANDELABRA “CHILDREN WITH LILIES”

Napoleon III, France, 19th century. After a model attributed to Jean-Louis Prieur (ca. 1732–1795).
Bronze, gilt, engraved and partly with dark patina. Five curved light branches in the shape of lily stems on different levels around a central light branch with round, flattened nozzles, carried by two putti. Round base with a surrounding dark patinated bronze decorative frieze with allegorical putti. On a retracted square base with a laurel wreath.
H 104 and 105 cm.

With holes from a former fitting for electricity. Signs of use and scratches on the gilding. Bronzes cleaned.

The design is based on a gilt bronze model of a pair of candelabra with three putti, attributed to the sculptor and bronze caster Jean-Louis Prieur (ca. 1732–1795) and presently in the Wallace Collection in London (inv. no. F138/F139). According to Ottomeyer/Pröschel, there are four candelabra in the Munich Residenz with only two putti as supporting figures, which can likewise be attributed to Prieur (see Ottomeyer/Pröschel: Vergoldete Bronzen. Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 174, fig. 3.5.10).
