ANTIQUE DIVING MASK

USA
1940
Metal, rubber
22 × 14 × 15 cm (not including stand)

Victor Berge, born in 1891 and raised in the Swedish town of Ockelbo, was a pioneering diver of the early 20th century, diving in the depths of the Pacific for forty years.

In the 1940s he invented the diving mask now used in salvage operations worldwide. On 4 March 1941, he filed his diving mask designs for a U.S. Patent. The masks were eventually produced by the Ohio Rubber Co. During World War II, the Berge Mask was part of the USN Standard Shallow Water Diving Outfit, which could also be converted into a gas mask.

The diver’s mask presented here is an original Berge diving mask from around 1940, produced by the Ohio Rubber Co., and is in very good condition. The mask was probably used in the Second World War and is therefore a rare memento of this chapter of human history.
