On October 14, 1947, Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager achieved the first manned horizontal supersonic flight with the Belle X-1, which he named Glamorous Glennis. The aircraft reached a speed of Mach 1.06 (1,125 km/h) at an altitude of around 13,100 m (43,000 ft).
