HELBARD

German, end of the 16th century, Kempten/Allgäu.
Long, square tip, inclined blade with slightly concave edge. Flat beak-shaped hook. Mark: "three-leafed clover with a short stalk, in a shield" (Claus Lerchli, Kempten). Two langets and two shaft bands, clamp. Original octagonal shaft is eight feet long.
L 232 cm.

Provenance:
- Collection M. Sigrist, Lucerne.

In the period from 1586 to 1591, Claus Lerchli from Kempten supplied Zurich with helbards, murder axes and bill hooks. Rare, hitherto unknown variant of a halberd produced by Lerchli, cf.
