Toutes les éditions publiées jusqu'à nos jours ne sont que des réimpressions de cette édition" (Bengesco). Ein Viertel der Edition nimmt die Korrespondenz ein, die mit sehr viel Aufwand und Schwierigkeiten zum grossen Teil erstmalig herausgegeben wurde. - Die Portraits stellen Persönlichkeiten dar, die mit Voltaire in Briefkontakt standen oder mit ihm befreundet waren (Friedrich II., Katharina II., die Marquise du Châtelet) oder die er in seinen Geschichtswerken beschrieb. Die Kupfertafeln illustrieren die Dramen und Erzählwerke. - Most of the binding have been repaired, allthough some of the covers remains fragile or split (about 10% of the collection). Nevertheless the content is an interesting sample with extra illustrations (suite-s), for exemple volume I contains 2 portraits of Voltaire (instead of 1) and 8 engraved plates by Gravelot (instead of 4). Vol. XXII is with 2 portraits of King Louis XV (instead of 1) and 4 plates (instead of none), vol. XXIV is with 1 map (as usual) and 3 portraits (instead of 1), etc. etc. Some of the extra illustration are printed on large paper (deluxe). Volume 70 contains Condorcet's Life of Voltaire and Condorcet's Memoires of Voltaire, index, and Additions & Corrections to the 70 volumes. This copy is from the former collection library of Percival Spencer Umfreville Pickering (1858-1920), a British chemist and horticulturist, with his bookplate and sometimes his handwritten name. The paper is overall very good and the content seems complete with everything, plus the additionnal rare illustrated material.
