Literature:
Robert Schmit: Eugène Boudin. 1824–1898, Paris 1973, vol. 3, p. 365, no. 3574 (with ill.).

It is not surprising that Eugène Boudin was drawn to the ports and coasts of Normandy, as he was the son of a sailor, born in Honfleur. As an artist, he was deeply interested in the portrayal of light and atmospheric effects and was one of the first to paint “en plein air”, directly in front of his subject. This method enabled him to give his works a vibrant immediacy and liveliness. He had a consequential influence on the Impressionists, especially on Claude Monet, whom he urged to paint out-of-doors.

From 1863 onwards, Boudin travelled to Trouville each summer. There he found inspiration for his many variations on beach and port scenes, as in the case of this wonderful work, where the fishermen return to port with their boats.
