GOLD PLAQUE WITH ENAMEL CLOISONNÉ OVERLAYS "CHRIST AS RULER OF THE WORLD"
Byzantine style, probably Spanish, piece from the 19th century.
Gold and enamel cloisonné in red, blue and white. Christ enthroned in the center as Ruler of the World with a book and a gesture of blessing, flanked by a standing Mary and the disciple John. In a later case.
13.5 × 8 cm; Case: 15.8 × 11.4 cm.
Chips and flaws in the enamel. One crack, fine scratches and small dents in the gold plate.
The present gold plaque is entirely in the style of Byzantine works from the 11th and 12th centuries. Comparable plaques can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, such as a plaque with the Virgin Mary (Inv. No. 17.190.714) and a work depicting St. Peter (Inv. No. 17.190.662).
In addition, the Metropolitan Museum, like other important museums, has a number of similar plaques from the former collection of Mikhail Petrovich Botkin (1839-1914) (e.g. Inv. No. 52.54.7). These plaques, originally dated as Byzantine and dating from the 10th to 12th centuries, turned out to be forgeries in later investigations and are thought to have originated in St. Petersburg. In contrast to the works from the Botkin Collection, the enamel on our plaque is less extensive and not as colorful. Although the gold plate is slightly convex, like on the medieval examples, it is too thin in comparison. The plaque can therefore neither be attributed to the Botkin series from Russian production, nor is it an original from the 11th century.
