A TRANSVERSE FLUTE WITH A LACQUERED CASE.

Japan, Meiji period, length 39.5 cm (flute).
Seven-holed bamboo flute, type ryûteki or nohkan, with plain grooved lacquer decoration, the luxurious case is finely decorated with plum blossoms in takamakie and nashiji. Red lacing.


Provenance: Old Swiss private collection.
This type of flute is usually played with drums in traditional performing arts such as Nô and Kabuki.
