TWO WOODEN HORYU-JI STYLE APSARA FIGURES.

Japan, Meiji period, height 50 and 51 cm (including aureole).
Paint hinoki (cypress) and kusunoki (camphor) wood. One figure was presumably made by Niiro Chûnosuke (1869-1954), the other by his workshop. In 1906 he was in charge of the conservation and restoration of the main hall of the Hôryûji. Minor damage. (2)


Similar wooden apsara figures originate from the Kondô (main hall) of the Hôryû-ji temple in Nara, dating from the 7th c. and 13th c. They are attached to the wooden canopy above the Amida Nyorai figure. Compare e.g. Kurata Bunsaku. Hôryû-ji: Temple of the Exalted Law, Early Buddhist Art from Japan.
