The present panel work refers to a lost work from the late period of the artist Joos van Cleve and was probably created in the late 16th century. Such panels were created for private devotion and were very popular in 16th-century Flanders, as their small format made them easy to transport and also suitable for taking along on journeys. Due to the lack of secure attributions to Cornelis van Cleve, it is difficult to make such an attribution.
