Still lifes are to be found throughout Lichtenstein’s oeuvre, but in the early 1970s in a small series he dedicated himself explicitly to this subject and explicated and examined the various types of still life. Shortly beforehand, and not as part of this series, but closely related to it, the present sheet was produced.
Lichtenstein produced it for the portfolio "Hommage à Picasso", which appeared in 6 volumes, with the work of 69 artists. Lichtenstein appears alongside Max Bill, Jim Dine, Allen Jones, Henry Moore, and others, in the fourth volume.
