The Gyrodus circularis is also called moonfish or pufferfish. The teeth of the animal were extremely well suited to crushing hard-shelled food. It could easily break open shells, snails and corals. The slab comes from the famous fossil find from the quarry area around Solnhofen and it is one of the largest specimens of Gyrodus circularis ever found. Since hardly any Plattenkalk is mined any more, only a few specimens have turned up in recent years. This fossil is in a remarkable condition, shows barely any restoration and contains an intact skeleton where all the fine details, including the teeth, are visible. Quite possibly one of the finest examples of Gyrodus circularis ever discovered.
