A PAIR OF BRONZE FIGURES "LE BAISER DONNÉ ET LE BAISER RENDU" ("THE KISS GIVEN AND THE KISS RETURNED")

France, beginning of the 19th century. Based on a model by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741–1828).
Brown-patinated bronze. Mounted on a gilt bronze foot with pearl frieze, and a cylindrical "Gris Sainte-Anne" marble pillar and a black marble plinth. Brass plates inscribed: Becaux and Encore, respectively.
H in total 27 and 28 cm, respectively.

Gilding slightly rubbed, marble with minor chips.

This depiction is based on marble sculptures by Jean-Antoine Houdon, which he created between 1772 and 1780. The models were very popular and were still frequently copied in the 19th century. A version of the two groups of figures from 1790, attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, is part of the Wallace Collection in London (Inv. Nos.: S218 and S217).
