FRAGMENT OF A FRESCO

Roman, probably 1st century AD.
Polychrome fresco. Depiction of a hippopotamus hunt in a river landscape featuring two hunters, two waterfowl and a dwelling on the riverbank.
Fresco: 36 × 109 cm, total 42 × 115 cm.


Several repairs and retouches.

Provenance:
- Antique dealer London, circa 1980 (according to Christie's).
- Collection Dr. William Conte sold at: Christie's New York, December 9, 2010, lot 157.
- Swiss private collection (copy of customs documents available).
